The Lincoln Saltdogs have selected Michael Pierre with seventh overall pick in the inaugural American Association draft in Forth Worth, Texas. Pierre was the only player taken by Lincoln during Wednesday’s proceedings.

Last year as a rookie in the independent Central League, Pierre played 55 games for the Pensacola Pelicans (now of the American Association) hitting .229 with one home run and 15 RBI. His best stretch came in the month of June when he hit .303. A 5-8, 175-pound utility player, Pierre split his time playing 36 games at second base, two at shortstop and 16 in the outfield. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native also stole 16 bases in 19 attempts in 2005.

The 22-year-old Pierre played his college baseball at Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, Fla.

The American Association draft was the culmination of the league’s three-day tryout camp at LaGrave Field, home of the Fort Worth Cats. In order to participate in the camp and be eligible for the draft, the nearly 200 prospects must have played professional baseball or had two years of collegiate experience within the past two years.
